Want to be part of the action but don’t want to race or be on TEAM IMBA? No worries, you can help raise money or donate to one of your TEAM IMBA riders, helping them and your local club reach their fund raising goal. The Massanutten Hoo-Ha event is fun weekend regardless of your racing desires, come out Saturday and ride the course or watch and help with the SVBC Super D event. Sunday is another great opportunity to watch and volunteer, or maybe bring your kids and have them participate in the free kids race.

While at Massanutten check out some of the new trails that have been built in the past four years.  The newest trails at Massanutten represent a great partnership between a local club (SVBC) and a private land owner (Massanutten Four Season Resort).  What was once an area that was closed to local cyclist is now open to SVBC members and those participating in the Massanutten Western Slope Trail Partnership.

  • Massanutten Hoo-Ha Cross Country Race:

With 21 years of history the Massanutten the Hoo-Ha is a classic mountain bike race as well as one of the oldest mountain bike racing events in the Country and has been designation a “NORBA Classic”.  Just like the mountain bike equipment over the past 21 years the Massanutten Hoo-Ha course has seen a lot changes, including the addition of the finest built trails in the east coast.  The event has also reached beyond a single day race to include a full weekend of racing and camping, making it worth the trip no matter how far you have to travel. The Hoo Ha event host all level of riders, from the first time racer to some of top pro racers in the Country.

  • Hoo-Ha Cross Country Course:  Over the past 21 years the Massanutten Hoo-Ha course has seen changes each year, ranging from a 5 mile lap to a single 21 mile course.  In 2008 the 11 mile lap course received the best reviews ever so expect something similar in 2009. The course includes a lot of climbing with over 1000 vertical feet difference between the highest and lowest point, most of this coming during the beginning of the lap. Massanutten is also known for it rocks, not a lot of loose rocks but fun stables rocks but the course has seen the addition of miles of smoother trails that make every level or rider smile.

  • What’s new for 2009.   In the past 3 years the Hoo-Ha course has seen the addition of over 4 miles of new, high quality trails built by the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition (SVBC) and IMBA. These new trails (Upper Ravine, Lower Ravine, Homestead, The Connector) please every rider from the beginner to expert racer. For the  2009 Hoo-Ha race SVBC hopes to unveil it’s newest addition to the Massanutten Hoo-Ha, a ? mile trail that will replace the steep pavement/gravel climb to the top of the mountain. This new trail will feature some of the finest hand built sections of trail anywhere in the Country with views stretching over 50 miles up and down the Shenandoah Valley. • XXC Course: The XXC route is one of the most challenging 35 miles rides a rider will ever face.  Unlike the regular cross country course the XXC dives deep into the George Washington National Forest and includes a more rugged back country feel. The additional trails of the XXC include the very steep Second Mountain Trail descent and climb (1000 vertical feet in 2 miles…ouch) and the wetter, rockier trails near Boone’s Run and Cub Run.  The majority of riders for the XXC find themselves out on the course for over 5 hours.

  • Super D Event Saturday June 6th 5pm: The Massanutten Super D is a challenging cross country oriented downhill race that is open to all riders. This event is a fund raiser for the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition and the trails of the Massanutten Western Slope.  Come ride, watch, volunteer or just cheer on the riders but make sure you come out Saturday for the festival atmosphere!! For more info (registration, course etc) visit the SVBC Super D site.

  • Super D Course: The course is 5 miles long with a lot of pedaling. The first two miles are VERY rocky, slow, technical, tight and twisty including several dismount sections. These first two miles are mostly flat, VERY technical with rocks and tight trees, this portion of the course favors a cross country bike and takes a majority of the overall time. The last three miles of the course is where most of the elevation is lost with extended downhill sections and several pedaling sections mixed in. Length: 5 miles long Elevation loss: 2200 vertical feet Elevation gain: 400 vertical feet. For full details go to the Super D page.

  • Camping: There is free camping on Friday and Saturday night for the Massanutten Hoo-Ha weekend.  There will be portable toilets, water and several fields for great camping.
